OPPOSE the SAVE Act – Voter Suppression Disguised as Reform
To: Sen. Grassley, Sen. Ernst
From: A constituent in Cedar Rapids, IA
April 11
I’m writing to express my strong opposition to the SAVE Act, a shameful and dangerous bill that would strip voting rights from millions of eligible Americans—particularly married women—under the false pretense of “election security.”
This bill requires that voters’ IDs and birth certificates match exactly unless they have a valid passport. That means anyone who changed their name after marriage—primarily women—will be at risk of being turned away at the polls unless they’ve gone through expensive, time-consuming bureaucratic steps that most people don’t even know they need to take.
Let me be clear:
• This is blatant voter suppression.
• It disproportionately targets women, especially working-class and low-income women who can’t afford a passport or the legal hurdles of amending a birth certificate.
• Many will only discover this issue on Election Day, when it’s too late.
This bill has nothing to do with security and everything to do with silencing voters who overwhelmingly oppose the extremist agenda of the far-right. Republicans know they can’t win fairly, so they’re attacking the backbone of the electorate—women.
Do not pass this bill. If you do, we will organize, mobilize, and remove you from office in the next election. You were elected to represent all of us—not just the people who vote the way you want them to.
Protect our civil rights. Protect our democracy. Vote NO on the SAVE Act.
