As an Alaskan, I value our state’s long tradition of independence and strong privacy protections. The right to make personal medical decisions—including the right to access abortion—should not be dictated by politicians or extremist judges. The erosion of reproductive rights in America is alarming, and I urge you to do everything in your power to protect the fundamental rights of women.
The 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling, enabled by Trump-appointed justices, stripped millions of Americans of their right to bodily autonomy. Fourteen states have banned abortion outright, forcing thousands to travel across state lines or carry pregnancies against their will—even in life-threatening situations.
My dear friend is one of those women who would not be alive today if extremist politicians had their way. In 2002, she survived an ectopic pregnancy because she was able to access emergency abortion care. Today, many states criminalize the very procedures that saved her life.
This is not about being “pro-life;” this is about controlling women and disregarding their health and autonomy.
Trump has made it clear that he will push for further nationwide abortion restrictions, appoint more far-right, anti-choice judges, and even support criminalizing those who seek or provide abortion care. His remarks about monitoring pregnancies and punishing women who obtain abortions are deeply disturbing and must be met with unwavering resistance.
I urge you to:
1. Protect reproductive rights at the federal level and oppose any attempt to restrict abortion access, including attacks on medication abortion.
2. Block the appointment of unqualified, right-wing judges who would strip away essential freedoms.
3. Defend Alaska’s strong privacy protections, ensuring that our state remains a place where individuals can make their own medical decisions without government interference.
We cannot afford to go backward. Women’s lives are at stake. Please stand firm in protecting reproductive freedom and push back against any effort to erode these fundamental rights.
