Protect the office of research for women’s health

To: Sen. Scott, Sen. Moody

From: A constituent in Miami, FL

February 6, 2025

Done I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent regarding the proposed cuts to the Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH). This action would have serious consequences for women's healthcare and medical research in our nation. Women constitute 51% of our population, yet historically, medical research has failed to adequately address women's unique health needs. The ORWH has been instrumental in correcting this longstanding imbalance by ensuring that women's health issues receive proper attention and research funding. This office's work is fundamental to advancing our understanding of how diseases, treatments, and medications affect women differently than men. The impact of gutting this office would be far-reaching and detrimental. The ORWH has been crucial in: - Ensuring women's proper representation in clinical trials, leading to safer and more effective treatments - Advancing research into conditions that disproportionately affect women - Addressing the maternal mortality crisis, which disproportionately affects women of color - Supporting essential research into female-specific health conditions - Promoting the careers of women scientists and researchers The scientific advances facilitated by this office benefit not just women but entire families and communities. Research has shown that when women's health needs are properly addressed, it leads to better outcomes for children, families, and society as a whole. Cutting funding to this office would undermine decades of progress in women's health research and potentially put women's lives at risk. The ORWH's work helps ensure that women receive appropriate medical care based on research that specifically includes and considers them. Before the establishment of this office, many clinical trials excluded women entirely, leading to dangerous gaps in our understanding of how medications and treatments affect female patients. We cannot afford to return to an era where women's health needs were an afterthought in medical research. I strongly urge you to maintain full funding and support for the Office of Research on Women's Health. This is not merely a women's issue – it's a family issue, a public health issue, and a matter of basic equity in healthcare. Your position on this matter will demonstrate your commitment to the health and wellbeing of half your constituents. Please stand against any attempts to reduce funding or diminish the capabilities of this vital office. The health of our mothers, sisters, daughters, and all women in our community depends on it. Thank you for your attention to this crucial matter. I look forward to hearing your position on protecting the Office of Research on Women's Health.
