Oppose HB 300 - protect our voting rights

To: Sen. Balderree, Rep. Moss

From: A constituent in Saratoga Springs, UT

February 10, 2025

I am writing to express my strong opposition to HB 300, which proposes significant changes to Utah’s election laws that would make voting more difficult for many citizens. Currently, Utah is recognized for its efficient and accessible vote-by-mail system, with over 90% of voters utilizing this method in recent elections. HB 300 seeks to alter this system by requiring voters to return their mail-in ballots in person to a polling place or a staffed drop box, where they must provide valid voter identification. While there are exceptions, such as for military or overseas voters and those who apply to return a ballot by mail, these changes would impose unnecessary barriers for the majority of voters. This bill would disproportionately affect elderly voters, individuals with disabilities, rural residents, and working families who may find it challenging to travel to designated drop-off locations during specific hours. The requirement for ballots to be returned to drop boxes attended by two or more poll workers could lead to logistical challenges, longer wait times, and potential privacy concerns. Moreover, these proposed changes could strain county resources and complicate election administration without providing clear benefits to election integrity. Utah’s current vote-by-mail system has been a model of success, promoting high voter participation and ensuring secure elections. The proposed restrictions in HB 300 do not address any demonstrated issues within our electoral process but instead create obstacles that could discourage voter participation. I urge you to oppose HB 300 and instead support policies that maintain and enhance accessible voting options for all Utahns. Preserving our efficient vote-by-mail system is crucial to upholding the democratic process and ensuring that every eligible voter can exercise their right without undue burden. Thank you for your time and consideration. I appreciate your dedication to serving our community and trust that you will consider the broader implications of this legislation.
