Pass Common Sense Gun Laws to Prevent the Next School Shooting
To: Rep. Ciscomani
From: A constituent in Tucson, AZ

Pass common sense gun laws now. A 16-year-old walked into Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, with a shotgun that reportedly belonged to his mother, and in three minutes four people were dead, including a 5-year-old child. According to James Densley of the Violence Prevention Project, which holds nearly 400 cases of school homicides spanning 26 years, whenever a teenage shooter's gun source is known, it comes from home every single time.
A locked gun safe costs a few hundred dollars. That is the cheapest school safety measure in America, and it sits in a parent's home, not at the school. Secure storage laws work. Courts in Oxford, Michigan and at Apalachee High School in Georgia have already found parents criminally liable for unsecured weapons used in school shootings. The law is catching up to the problem. Legislation needs to catch up too.
A brave father stopped this shooter, but stopping a shooter is not the same as preventing a shooting. The goal has to be making sure these situations never start. Secure storage requirements are the most direct, evidence-based tool available. Vote yes on legislation that mandates it.
