The proposed cuts to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) will have devastating impacts on Virginia's cultural organizations, historic preservation efforts, and the promotion of our state's rich history and traditions. Virginia Humanities, our state humanities council and NEH affiliate, stands to lose $1.35 million in funding, representing 20% of its overall budget. This money directly supports vital programming, grants to local museums and cultural groups, and the preservation of Virginia's folklife heritage. In just the past year alone, Virginia Humanities has provided nearly $1 million to museums, artists, historians and other organizations across the Commonwealth. It has introduced thousands to authors at free book festivals, shared Virginia history with millions online, aired thought-provoking conversations on public radio, provided teacher training, and ensured cultural traditions are passed to the next generation through folklife apprenticeships. As a partner celebrating the 250th anniversary of America's founding, it awarded over $100,000 in grants highlighting this milestone. Losing this critical NEH funding will significantly impair Virginia Humanities' ability to serve the people of Virginia. The investments it makes generate over $4 million annually for local economies through cultural tourism and spending - an economic impact that will be sorely felt if these funds disappear overnight. The humanities are vital to understanding our shared heritage and fostering connections between all Virginians. I urge you to protect NEH funding to Virginia Humanities and support our state's invaluable cultural resources.
