An Open Letter

To: Rep. Criswell, Sen. Raatz, Gov. Braun

From: A constituent in New Castle, IN

November 30

I am writing as your constituent to strongly urge you to oppose any effort to support, endorse, or encourage a pardon for former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted in U.S. federal court on serious charges involving drug trafficking and corruption. A pardon in this case would not only undermine the integrity of the U.S. justice system, but also send an alarming message to communities across the Americas who are fighting for transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. President Hernández’s conviction followed years of documented involvement with criminal networks, systemic corruption, and actions that contributed to instability and suffering throughout Honduras. Granting clemency would effectively dismiss the extensive evidence presented in court and negate the efforts of investigators, prosecutors, and witnesses—many of whom risked their lives to bring the truth forward. Furthermore, such a pardon would damage the United States’ credibility in promoting anti-corruption initiatives, strengthening democratic institutions, and supporting human rights abroad. It would embolden corrupt actors, weaken regional security, and exacerbate the conditions that drive migration and violence in Central America. For these reasons, I respectfully request that you: Publicly oppose any pardon or clemency for former President Hernández; Defend the integrity of the judicial process that led to his conviction; and Support continued U.S. efforts to combat corruption and transnational criminal networks in Central America.
