I am writing to demand your immediate denouncement of the new official White House site that names a “media offender of the week.” I saw a screenshot on social media and thought, “This has to be AI or an altered photo, because even the Trump Administration couldn’t attack the First Amendment *this* nakedly. Right?” Wrong:
https://www.whitehouse.gov/mediabias/
As an adult, I am registered Independent. As a child, my Republican parents — my Libertarian-leaning late father in particular — emphasized that one of the major differences between the U.S. and the rest of the world was the freedom of speech, both personally and for the press. If you plan to continue to call yourself a conservative, it is imperative that you demand this retaliatory site’s shuttering.
The White House certainly can and does make statements. Interviews with some media sources can and will be granted over others. This site is, frankly, absolutely terrifying to me and should be to you too. For the government to dedicate these resources to this with the heading “Misleading. Biased. Exposed.” smacks of an authoritarian regime that is trying desperately to control the narrative around it. Didn’t the GOP complain bitterly about COVID-related censorship of demonstrably false information? (Also, do you still care about “waste, fraud, and abuse,” or is that just for programs you don’t like?)
The Constitution aside (and it’s wild that I’m starting a sentence to my elected representative like that, especially knowing you truly don’t care), my concern is that this ratcheting of rhetoric in an already-tense setting will increase the risk of targeted attacks on journalists who are named on this site. Please know that if you choose to overlook this unwise site, any resulting violence will be squarely on your conscience.
Please immediately:
(1) Publish a statement denouncing this site.
(2) Move to start an investigation into who approved and worked on this site.
(3) Call for a review of the situation by Constitutional law experts.
(4) Demand the dismantling of this site.
