Higher education budget
To: Rep. Mfume, Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks

s. I am writing to express my deep conc ern regarding provisions in the current House budget proposal that would severely undermine access to higher education for low- and middle-income familie interest subsidy on federal student loans, and sunset Graduate PLUS and Parent PLUS loan programs. These policies are essential to maintaining an equita ble and accessible higher education system and support the fundamental American value of upward social mobility. Specifically, I urge you to oppose the proposals to eliminate the exclusion of scholarships and fellowship income from taxable income, end the in-school y even graduate, discouraging enrollment and disproportionately affecting those from low-income backgrounds. Finally, sunsetting Graduate and Parent PLUS loans would strip vital resources from families seeking higher education opportunities and aspiring professionals pursuing advanced degrees critical to our economy, such as educators, healthcare providers, and research scientists. , turning these lifelines into financial burdens. Similarly, ending the in-school interest subsidy would saddle students with compounding debt before the Eliminating the tax exclusion for scholarships and fellowships would disproportionately harm students who rely on financial aid to afford their education one of the American Dream, and denying this opportunity to the next generation is not only short-sighted but fundamentally un-American. These proposed cuts are not just policy changes; they are an assault on the promise of higher education as a pathway to opportunity. By making education less accessible, these measures will exacerbate inequality, hinder social mobility, and compromise our nation's future workforce. Education is a cornerst special education, and programs that support healthy working families--the backbone of our entire society. Oppose these harmful provisions in the House b udget proposal and advocate for a future where education remains a bridge to opportunity, not a barrier. I urge you to stand with your constituents and defend policies that protect access to higher education for all--and continued support of K-12 education, Thank you for doing all you can to support families and students to have the opportunities to further their education.
