As a proud member of Clark County, Ohio, I am urging my Representatives to take a stand and protect our local immigrants. It is unjust to deport individuals who have not committed any crimes since coming to this country. Many undocumented immigrants do not receive government benefits, and DACA recipients, in particular, are hardworking individuals who have been in the United States for most of their lives, paying taxes and contributing to programs like Social Security. These immigrants pay property, state, and local taxes, and some even pay federal taxes if they have work permits. They give back more to our society than they take.
In Clark County, Ohio, we have witnessed firsthand the positive impact of Haitian immigrants on our local economy. While there may be some adjustments needed, these immigrants have significantly contributed to our community. For example, the Nearly New Shop has experienced a substantial increase in business, allowing them to triple the amount of grant money given to local organizations like food banks and soup kitchens. This demonstrates the valuable contributions immigrants make to our society.
I firmly believe that we should treat our neighbors with the same love and respect that we show ourselves. I urge you to resist ICE agents and protect all of our citizens, including our immigrant neighbors. Just as we would do anything to protect our families, many immigrants have come to this country seeking a better life for themselves and their loved ones. We must not allow law-abiding immigrants to be targeted and unfairly treated.
Furthermore, I believe that if an immigrant has broken the law, it is safer for the United States to have them in our jail system rather than deported abroad. We cannot control their actions or prevent them from reentering if they are sent away. It is crucial that we uphold our democratic values and stand up for what is right during this constitutional crisis. History will remember those who fought for justice and equality.
