As a Utah constituent, I am alarmed by President Trump’s actions in his second term. While respecting democracy, I believe these policies harm our economy, society, and global standing. I urge you to address these issues for Utahns and Americans. 1. Tariffs Trump’s 10% import duty and higher rates for 57 nations, announced April 2, 2025, disrupt markets, with the S&P 500 nearing bear-market territory. Penn Wharton predicts an 8% GDP drop, costing households $58,000. Utah’s agriculture faces export losses and higher costs, worsened by Canada’s 25% tariffs. Push for balanced trade policies. 2. Deportation Executive orders block asylum, reinstate border emergencies, and push mass deportation. Ending birthright citizenship and deporting a U.S. citizen child raise concerns. Utah’s economy, reliant on immigrant labor, suffers, as does America’s image. Back humane immigration reforms. 3. Deregulation Trump’s cuts via the Department of Government Efficiency slash jobs and rules. While streamlining helps, 55% of Americans oppose risks to services. Weakening climate and financial rules hurts Utah’s clean energy and lands. Support evidence-based regulations. 4. Executive Overreach With 140 executive orders, Trump targets critics, sanctioning firms like Perkins Coie. Threats to media and judges erode trust. Utah values fairness; oppose overreach and protect courts. 5. Isolationism Withdrawing from WHO, cutting USAID, and threatening NATO isolate America. Trump’s Russia-Ukraine stance and ally tariffs weaken leadership. Utah’s bases and trade suffer. Strengthen alliances. 6. Discontent Pew shows 40% approval, with 59% opposing tariffs. A PBS poll gives Trump’s 100 days a failing grade from 45%. Utah faces rising costs, like eggs. Address economic woes. Though some see these as bold, they risk our stability. I urge you to: - Protect Utah’s economy from bad trade policies. - Support fair immigration. - Preserve key regulations. - Defend the rule of law. - Bolster alliances. Thank you for your service.
