I write to you with deep concern about the systematic corruption within the Department of Justice under the current Administration, which has fundamentally betrayed the constitutional principles our institutions were designed to protect. The Justice Department operates on a foundation of trust—the presumption of regularity—that the government will act honestly and in good faith before the courts. This trust has been shattered. Federal Judge Mary S. McElroy in Rhode Island discovered that DOJ lawyers had fabricated claims that a hospital had refused records requests regarding gender-transition care for youths. Judge McElroy stated bluntly: "D.O.J. has proven unworthy of this trust at every point in this case." In Chicago, Judge April Perry uncovered evidence that federal prosecutors had removed grand jurors skeptical of their case in an ICE protest prosecution, then concealed this manipulation through redaction. Such conduct represents a profound corruption of justice itself. Equally alarming is the systematic retaliation against DOJ employees and law enforcement officials who refuse to act unethically. Brian Driscoll, the FBI's acting director, revealed that he was ordered to compile a list of agents who investigated January 6th cases for purging. When Driscoll refused to comply with this politicization, FBI Director Kash Patel fired him. Similarly, Francisco Reuveni, an attorney in the Office of Immigration Litigation, was ordered to sign a brief falsely characterizing a migrant as a terrorist—despite having access to records containing no such evidence. When Reuveni refused to lie, he was placed on leave and subsequently terminated. His whistleblower complaint to the Office of Inspector General was dismissed within a single day. This pattern—lying to courts, retaliating against principled officials, ignoring judicial orders, and suppressing legitimate dissent within the department—represents a wholesale abandonment of the rule of law. These are not isolated incidents but evidence of systematic corruption at the highest levels. I urge you to convene immediate congressional hearings, demand the restoration of independence within the Justice Department, and pass legislation protecting career prosecutors and law enforcement officials from political retaliation. Our democracy depends upon federal institutions operating with integrity and independence from executive politicization.
