Vote No on SB128 - Protect Voting Rights for Citizens with Name Changes
To: Sen. Moody, Sen. Scott
From: A constituent in Ocala, FL
March 24
Vote no on SB128. This bill would make it nearly impossible for me and millions of other eligible citizens to register to vote simply because our current names don't match our birth documents.
I've changed my name twice. I was raised by my middle name, and I'm married. My birth certificate doesn't reflect who I am today. Under SB128, I would need to produce documentary proof of citizenship that matches across multiple name changes, or navigate an unclear alternative affidavit process that the bill leaves entirely undefined. This isn't a theoretical problem. Women who marry, divorced individuals, adoptees, and anyone who has legally changed their name face the same barrier.
The bill gives states just 30 days to create verification systems with no federal funding. It doesn't address how election officials should handle the millions of native-born citizens whose documents don't align due to name changes, clerical errors, or incomplete vital records. The private right of action provision will unleash lawsuits against election officials trying to navigate these impossible situations.
I'm a U.S. citizen. My right to vote shouldn't depend on whether I can produce a paper trail connecting every version of my name across decades. Reject this bill.
