As your constituent, I urge you to support Senate Bill 943, the "Kids Over Corporations Act." I strongly support S943 because it restores a reliable revenue stream by maintaining a meaningful corporate income tax rate for C corporations doing business in North Carolina. Holding the corporate rate at 5% (and removing provisions that would phase the tax out) will generate funds to protect and expand essential public services—public education, affordable childcare, health services, and disaster readiness—without increasing the tax burden on working families. Stable revenue from corporations helps reduce the regressive pressure that otherwise forces deeper cuts to services or shifts costs to lower-income households. Investing those revenues in children and families yields long-term returns: better-funded schools raise graduation and workforce-readiness rates; expanded child care and early education increase parents’ ability to work and support their households; and stronger public health and safety nets reduce costly crises down the road. A corporate tax that asks profitable, often large, businesses to pay their fair share aligns with basic fairness and with the state’s ability to meet growing needs—especially after recent federal funding uncertainties and climate-related expenses from storms and flooding. S943 also levels the playing field between small, locally owned businesses and large multistate corporations that often exploit loopholes to minimize their state tax obligations. Requiring corporations that benefit from North Carolina’s infrastructure, workforce, and markets to contribute more equitably will support small businesses and communities across the state by funding public investments they rely on. Finally, keeping a predictable corporate tax base improves fiscal planning. It reduces the pressure to enact sudden program cuts or one-time fixes and instead allows lawmakers to responsibly prioritize long-term investments in children, education, and community resilience—investments that will strengthen North Carolina’s economy for all residents. Please vote yes on S943 to put kids, families, and sustainable public services ahead of tax giveaways to large corporations.
