Oppose Tariffs on NATO Allies and Threats Against Greenland
To: Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee, Rep. Maloy
From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT
January 19
I am writing to demand that you take immediate action to oppose any tariffs or aggressive policies targeting our NATO allies. Recent threats to implement tariffs against allied nations, coupled with plans to forcibly acquire Greenland, represent a dangerous departure from decades of successful transatlantic cooperation that has kept Americans safe and prosperous.
Multiple NATO countries have issued warnings that implementing such tariffs risks a dangerous downward spiral in relations with our closest security partners. These are not adversaries but allies who have stood with us through every major conflict since World War II, including invoking Article 5 after the September 11 attacks to defend American soil. Threatening them with economic warfare while simultaneously pursuing territorial expansion undermines the very foundation of collective security that protects American interests globally.
The economic consequences for your constituents would be severe. Tariffs on NATO allies would inevitably trigger retaliatory measures against American exports, harming farmers, manufacturers, and small businesses in our district. Our economy is deeply integrated with European markets, and a trade war with allies would cost American jobs while raising prices for consumers already struggling with inflation.
Beyond economics, this approach damages America's strategic position. NATO allies provide critical military bases, intelligence sharing, and diplomatic support that amplify American power far beyond what we could achieve alone. Alienating these partners strengthens adversaries like Russia and China who seek to divide the democratic world.
I expect you to publicly oppose any tariffs on NATO countries and to use your position to prevent policies that threaten our alliances. Introduce or co-sponsor legislation that would require Congressional approval before implementing tariffs on allied nations. The security and prosperity of your constituents depend on maintaining strong relationships with democratic partners, not attacking them.
