Congress Must Act — The Theft of Democracy Has Begun

To: Sen. Kaine, Sen. Warner, Rep. Subramanyam

From: A constituent in Lovettsville, VA

February 15

When people in power say these things, we need to believe them. They are saying the quiet part out loud. They are here to steal democracy. We are witnessing coordinated rhetoric and actions that signal an open assault on free and fair elections. Kristi Noem publicly stated: “When it gets to Election Day, we've been proactive to make sure that we have the right people voting, electing the right leaders to lead this country.” Steve Bannon has openly discussed ICE being present at polling locations. Donald Trump told U.S. soldiers at Fort Bragg that they must vote Republican — a direct violation of democratic and military norms. Stephen Miller has repeatedly pushed propaganda framing immigration enforcement, surveillance, and voter suppression as “security,” conditioning the public to accept authoritarian control as patriotism. This is not normal politics. This is not free speech in good faith. This is propaganda. This is voter intimidation. This is democratic erosion. To the Democrats who represent us: strongly worded statements and social media posts will not save democracy. We need action. Oversight. Legislation. Enforcement. Accountability. To the Republicans in Congress: stop ignoring the will of your constituents. Stop being lap dogs for an administration that treats the Constitution as optional. Grow a spine. You know that non-citizen voting is a moot issue — it is not happening, it is not widespread, and it is not a legitimate threat to U.S. elections. You also know that bills like the SAVE Act are not about “election integrity,” they are tools of voter suppression — designed to intimidate, disenfranchise, and obstruct lawful voters under the false banner of security. You are manufacturing fear to justify control. History will remember what you do — and what you fail to do. There will be a reckoning, and those that betrayed the people of the United States and the Constitution will not be remembered kindly. We, the people, are watching. And we are demanding action — not silence.
