I am writing to express my concerns regarding House Resolution 166 (HR166), introduced on February 26, 2025, which supports the Iranian people’s aspirations for a democratic, secular, and nonnuclear Iran. While I fully support the Iranian people’s pursuit of democracy and freedom, I am concerned about the resolution’s implicit association with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), also known as the MEK or NCRI. We cannot support the MEK/NCRI/PMOI due to their controversial history and lack of broad legitimacy among Iranians inside Iran and throughout the diaspora. I urge you to engage with a wider range of Iranian opposition groups and community leaders who more accurately reflect the diversity of Iranian perspectives. A nuanced approach will better align U.S. policy with both American interests and the authentic aspirations of the Iranian people.
