Protect Education for All: Strengthen Department of Education
To: Sen. Tillis, Sen. Budd
From: A constituent in Charlotte, NC
February 6, 2025
The planned executive order to abolish the Department of Education is a misguided and harmful move that would severely undermine educational opportunities for millions of students across the country. This department plays a crucial role in providing essential funding and resources, protecting civil rights, and supporting vulnerable populations, including students with disabilities and those from low-income backgrounds. Dismantling the Department of Education would lead to soaring costs for higher education, balloon class sizes, slash job training programs, and deprive students of vital special education services. Instead of abolishing this vital agency, we need to strengthen and adequately fund the Department of Education to uphold its mission of fostering educational excellence and opportunity for all Americans, regardless of their background or circumstances. Education is a fundamental right and a cornerstone of our democracy; we must prioritize investing in our young people and ensuring they have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
