Vote NO on HB1081/SB0709

To: Del. Jones, Gov. Moore, Sen. Brooks, Del. White Holland, Del. Phillips

From: A constituent in Randallstown, MD

February 17

I urge you to vote NO on HB1081/SB0709, the so-called "Unmask Hate Act." While it claims to address intimidation, it risks being weaponized against Black and minority communities, leading to racial profiling and unjust criminalization. This bill also ignores the ongoing public health concerns—flu, tuberculosis, COVID-19, and now bird flu—where masks remain a crucial protective measure. Criminalizing face coverings under vague "intimidation" language will disproportionately harm marginalized groups, giving law enforcement excessive discretion in enforcement. Instead of targeting masks, we should focus on addressing actual harassment and threats without endangering public health or civil rights. Please oppose HB1081/SB0709 and protect the rights and safety of all Marylanders.
