Thank You for Using Water Restrictions to Block ICE Detention Center

To: Mayor Mendenhall

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

March 26

Thank you for approving the water usage restrictions on March 23rd to block the ICE detention center near the airport. Using every tool at the city's disposal to stop this facility is exactly the right approach. The numbers make clear why this detention center cannot work here. The warehouse ICE purchased for $145.4 million currently uses 5,600 gallons of water per day. A 7,500-person detention facility would consume 1-2 million gallons daily. During a drought severe enough to require a 10% cut in government water use, adding that burden to our infrastructure is reckless. The new code extending restrictions to nonresidential development and narrowing the government building exemption protects our water supply and our community. Your joint statement that our neighbors deserve safety and dignity regardless of where they were born reflects Salt Lake City's values. This facility threatens both our water security and the people who would be detained there. Keep fighting this and don't back down when ICE pushes back.
