Vote no on HR 9495

To: Rep. Bera

From: A constituent in Citrus Heights, CA

November 11

This legislative proposal poses a grave threat to civil liberties and freedom of expression. By granting the Treasury Department unchecked authority to revoke the tax-exempt status of any nonprofit deemed a "terrorist supporting organization" without due process or evidence, it opens the door for the government to suppress dissent and undermine vital advocacy work. Numerous respected civil society groups spanning diverse causes have voiced strong opposition, highlighting how this bill could cripple their ability to operate and speak truth to power. We cannot allow the administration to wield such a blunt instrument against its critics and ideological foes under the guise of combating terrorism. Charities, advocacy groups, and other nonprofits are already subject to extensive regulations. This redundant legislation serves no constructive purpose beyond granting unchecked power to an administration that has openly threatened retaliation against its political enemies. Protecting civil liberties and safeguarding our democratic institutions demands rejecting this dangerous overreach. I urge you to stand firm against any attempts to curtail free speech and organizational freedoms by voting against this misguided bill. Preserving space for dissent and rigorous civic engagement is essential for a healthy, vibrant democracy.
