Protect American’s Data Hold DOGE Accountable

To: Rep. Rouzer, Sen. Tillis, Sen. Budd

From: A constituent in Wilmington, NC

February 20, 2025

I am writing to express my deep concern over recent reports that DOGE and Elon Musk had unauthorized access to student loan data within the Department of Education. This represents a significant breach of privacy, a violation of student borrowers’ rights, and a failure to secure sensitive financial information. Millions of Americans rely on the Department of Education to safeguard their personal and financial data as they navigate the challenges of student loan repayment. Any unauthorized access, particularly by private individuals or organizations with no legal or ethical justification, is unacceptable and must be investigated immediately. I urge you to take swift action to: Launch a full investigation into how this breach occurred and who was responsible. Hold those accountable for any wrongdoing, ensuring that student loan borrowers’ data is protected from misuse. Strengthen data security within the Department of Education to prevent future breaches. Ensure transparency by requiring the Department of Education to disclose any potential breaches to affected borrowers immediately. As a constituent, I expect my representatives to prioritize the protection of our personal information and to take a firm stance against any entity that compromises the security of student borrowers. I look forward to your response on what steps you plan to take to address this serious issue.
