I’m writing with deep concern over the U.S. government’s role in deporting dozens of migrants—many without charges or proper hearings—to El Salvador’s CECOT prison, a facility known for documented human rights abuses.
Recent reporting from the Associated Press and other outlets reveals that over 100 migrants, including U.S. residents like Kilmar Abrego Garcia, have been sent to this maximum-security prison. Many of them were deported with little or no evidence of wrongdoing, some in direct violation of U.S. court orders. Once in CECOT, they are subjected to horrific treatment including sleep deprivation, starvation, and physical violence.
This is not justice. These individuals deserve due process, not indefinite incarceration in a foreign prison where our government still holds de facto control. Detaining people in another country without charges or access to lawyers is a clear violation of constitutional and international human rights standards.
I urge you to take immediate action to:
Secure the return of all individuals deported by the U.S. and held at CECOT;
Investigate how these deportations were allowed to proceed and hold those responsible accountable;
Introduce or support legislation prohibiting deportations to any country where the U.S. cannot ensure humane treatment and due process.
This practice is a disgrace to American values and the rule of law. We cannot turn a blind eye to what is happening in our name. Please act swiftly to bring these individuals home and prevent such abuses from happening again.
