The first amendment of the constitution of the United States of America was not written as a loose guideline. It was not a suggestion, an inference, or a malleable recommendation. It is an inalienable right for the residents and citizens of this nation to speak up and be heard. HOWEVER… there is a very critical caveat. Our forefathers did NOT intend this right to be wielded or taken advantage of by marginalist hate groups with divisive messaging. For example, it was not written so Trump could call white supremacists good people.
So when the United States Supreme Court ruled conversion therapy a protected act under the first amendment, WE THE PEOPLE were absolutely floored.
If you’re not familiar, in brief, conversion therapy is a program that discourages homosexuality- usually in teens- by whatever means necessary. This can include brain washing, forced counseling, and even heinous physical acts such as electro therapy- things that modern psychiatry and psychology know to be extremely harmful and counterproductive.
I urge you to speak with your colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support freedom of sexuality and the pursuit of happiness. I urge you to pass laws banning conversion therapy. I urge you to challenge the United States Supreme Court. I urge you to defend your constituents!
