Oversight Needed on Trump’s Exec Order & Martial Law Risk
To: Rep. Mfume
From: A constituent in Baltimore, MD
April 8
I am writing to express my deep concern over the implications of former President Donald Trump’s January 20 executive order, which declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and opened the door to unprecedented domestic military involvement. In light of recent reports, social media discourse, and troubling historical parallels, I urge you to take immediate action to investigate the scope, legality, and potential consequences of this order—including the alarming possibility of martial law being declared under the guise of national security. Viral videos and online discussions—some with over 2.5 million views—have fueled public fear and speculation that April 20, a date infamously associated with Adolf Hitler’s birthday, could mark a dangerous turning point. These fears are not unfounded when considered alongside recent moves by the Trump administration: • Deployment of military assets, including a Navy destroyer and Blackhawk helicopters, to the southern border; • Language framing immigration as an “invasion” involving terrorists, smugglers, and foreign adversaries; • The forthcoming joint report from the Secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security, due April 20, which may recommend invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807; • Speculation of drone strikes on Mexico-based cartels, blurring the line between foreign conflict and domestic militarization. Let us be clear: the Insurrection Act allows for temporary military deployment under civilian control, but martial law would be a seismic and dangerous shift—suspending civil liberties, centralizing military authority, and threatening the very foundation of American democracy. In the hands of a leader with authoritarian tendencies, the distinction between emergency response and power grab can quickly erode. This is not a moment to stay silent or hope that fear-mongering remains speculation. Congress must demand transparency, accountability, and constitutional safeguards. I urge you to: 1. Launch a formal inquiry into the January 20 executive order and any plans to invoke the Insurrection Act; 2. Request public disclosure of the April 20 joint report before any executive actions are taken; 3. Reaffirm congressional authority over war powers, domestic military deployment, and the protection of civil rights under the Constitution. We, the people, have a right to know how far this administration is willing to go—and what legal or democratic boundaries it may attempt to cross. You have the power, and the duty, to act now before irreversible harm is done.
