Right-to-repair is not a joke!

To: Sen. Kim, Sen. Booker, Rep. Smith

From: A constituent in Forked River, NJ

November 18

Consumers have been pushing for the right to repair their own bought-and-paid-for items, and manufacturers have been unwilling to relinquish control (and that sweet revenue stream that comes with fixing items produced specifically to break) in the name of digital and, in some cases, personal safety. But what's this? Hyundai is... giving in? They say they're fine with owners of their cars replacing their own brake pads! Sure, they engineered their newest cars to require a $2000 adapter, an app with a $60 PER WEEK SUBSCRIPTION, and a permanent Internet connection JUST TO REPLACE BRAKE PADS, something people have been able to do without fancy gadgets for a century... but hey, you can still do it all by yourself if you want. This is just the latest in a trend of malicious compliance implemented by monopolistic corporations that have decided that we need to buy, buy, buy to satisfy their irrational goal of infinite growth. And if Hyundai gets away with it, you can be sure that all of the other automobile manufacturers will follow suit. Right-to-repair locked behind a paywall isn't right-to-repair at all. We demand legislation to end these deceptive practices and give us back what's ours!!
