Oppose Mullin's Confirmation as DHS Secretary

To: Sen. Lee, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

March 18

Vote no on Markwayne Mullin's nomination to lead the Department of Homeland Security. His confirmation hearing revealed disqualifying character flaws and a troubling lack of transparency that make him unfit to manage 260,000 employees and critical national security operations. Mullin refused to apologize for saying he "understood" why Rand Paul's neighbor attacked him and has a documented history of threatening physical violence, including nearly fighting a witness during a 2023 hearing. Someone who applauds violence against political opponents cannot be trusted to lead ICE and Border Patrol agents. His temperament alone should end this nomination. The stolen valor allegations are equally concerning. Mullin made vague claims about "smelling war" despite having no military service, then hid behind classification claims when pressed for details. Even after a classified briefing, senators remained unconvinced. Peters was right when he said Mullin has not been forthcoming and his story keeps changing. This department oversees immigration enforcement, TSA, and the Coast Guard. It requires steady leadership and sound judgment. Mullin has demonstrated neither. His confirmation would be a dangerous mistake.
