Take action to protect Greenland, NATO, and American/Democratic principles
To: Sen. Kaine, Sen. Warner, Rep. McGuire
From: A constituent in Charlottesville, VA
January 13
I am writing as a deeply alarmed constituent to demand immediate congressional action to prevent the President from taking any military action in or against Greenland.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a NATO ally, and its defense is integrated into the NATO framework. Public threats by the President to “take” Greenland by force or “one way or the other” are nothing less than threats against an ally and are fundamentally incompatible with the North Atlantic Treaty and the entire premise of collective defense.
If the United States were to use or seriously prepare to use force against Greenland or Denmark, it would trigger a profound crisis within NATO and could effectively mean the end of the alliance. Such a rupture would directly benefit Russia and China, who have clear strategic interests in weakening Western unity, especially in the Arctic region.
I therefore urge you to:
• Publicly condemn any threat of the use of force against Greenland or Denmark.
• Support and introduce legislation expressly prohibiting the use of U.S. armed forces against NATO allies absent an armed attack on the United States and a specific, subsequent act of Congress.
• Demand a thorough investigation—through hearings and subpoenas—into any planning, legal opinions, or directives related to potential military action concerning Greenland.
• Make clear that threatening a NATO ally with armed force is incompatible with the presidential oath of office and, if pursued, constitutes grounds for impeachment.
The United States should strengthen, not sabotage, NATO. I expect you to act swiftly to ensure that no president can unilaterally endanger our alliances, our security, and our values.
