Pass the SAFE Act and Stop the BLM's Wild Mustang Slaughter Pipeline Pass the SAFE Act. Right now, the Bureau of Land Management is selling federally protected wild mustangs for $25 a head to buyers who load them into trailers and drive them to slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico. A New York Times investigation confirmed it. More than 3,700 mustangs have been sold off since the current administration took office, many ending up in kill pens. This is not a gray area - it is a deliberate workaround of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, which has protected these animals since 1971. The economics alone should embarrass anyone defending this. Taxpayers spend up to $3,000 per horse to capture mustangs by helicopter. The government then sells them for $25. The buyer collects up to $750 per animal at a foreign slaughter plant. Taxpayers fund the roundup; a livestock trader pockets the profit when the horse dies. The SAFE Act would close this loophole by banning the export of American horses for slaughter. It was left out of the 2026 Farm Bill and has never passed Congress. That needs to change. Co-sponsor the SAFE Act and push to get it to a vote.
