The bill is big but not beautiful -- oppose it

To: Rep. Edwards

From: A verified voter in Asheville, NC

July 2

I am writing as your constituent to urge you to vote against the tax and spending legislation that has just passed the Senate and is returning to the House. As a North Carolina resident, I am deeply concerned about the harmful impacts this bill would have on our state's rural communities and our nation's fiscal health. The Senate-passed bill would devastate rural North Carolina communities that depend on Medicaid and SNAP. According to the latest Congressional Budget Office analysis, this legislation would result in 11.8 million more Americans losing health care coverage by 2034. The bill imposes work requirements on able-bodied people, including some parents and older Americans, makes eligibility more stringent, and changes federal reimbursements to states. In rural North Carolina, where hospitals are already struggling and food insecurity is a real concern, these cuts would be catastrophic. While the bill includes $25 billion for rural hospitals, this does not adequately address the broader damage from the Medicaid cuts that many of our rural hospitals rely on for survival. Adding $4.5 trillion in tax cuts while imposing only $1.2 trillion in spending cuts during high interest rates is fiscally irresponsible. The CBO found this package would increase the deficit by nearly $3.3 trillion over the decade. The interest payments on this additional debt will burden future generations and limit our ability to invest in critical infrastructure, education, and other priorities that North Carolina needs. This is particularly concerning given that the tax benefits primarily help wealthy Americans while the spending cuts harm working families who depend on these programs. The rushed process that brought this legislation to your chamber is deeply troubling. The Senate made significant changes to Medicaid provisions, yet you are being asked to vote on this 940-page bill by July 4th without adequate time for public review and input. North Carolinians deserve to understand how this bill would affect them and to have their voices heard through their elected representative. I was encouraged that Senator Tillis voted against this legislation, citing concerns about millions losing access to Medicaid health care. I urge you to show the same thoughtful leadership and vote against this harmful bill. North Carolina's rural communities deserve protection from these devastating cuts, and our nation deserves fiscally responsible policies that don't add trillions to our debt while cutting essential services.
