Oppose the Grand Staircase and Bears Ears Monument Reductions
To: Rep. Wilson, Sen. Graham Nordone, Sen. Scott
From: A verified voter in North Augusta, SC
July 20
On July 13, President Trump signed proclamations stripping over 3 million acres — more than 90% of the protected land — from Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears National Monuments. This is illegal. Senators Lee and Curtis, Governor Cox, and Rep. Maloy championed these reductions while uranium mining and coal industry donors bankrolled the political machine that delivered them. Voters are watching, and this kind of corporate giveaway of sacred public land motivates people to show up at the ballot box. Support America's Red Rock Wilderness Act and publicly oppose these monument reductions. These lands belong to the public — not to extractive industry lobbyists. The Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Inter-Tribal Coalitions have fought for this land for generations, and their voices carry more weight than any campaign check. Gutting monument protections to benefit a handful of donors is exactly the kind of decision that ends political careers in a state where outdoor recreation and public lands are part of the identity. President Trump recently signed an executive order reducing the size of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. In defending that decision, he claimed people couldn’t even walk, hunt, or fish there. That’s simply not true. Hunting and fishing were already allowed under Utah’s existing laws and regulations, and people could hike, camp, backpack, and enjoy these incredible landscapes. The debate has never been about keeping Americans off their public lands. It’s about protecting them. Public lands provide clean water, wildlife habitat, world-class recreation, Tribal cultural resources, and irreplaceable archaeological sites. Once those resources are damaged, we don’t get them back. Protecting public lands doesn’t mean locking people out. It means ensuring they’re still here for our kids and grandkids to hunt, fish, hike, paddle, camp, climb, and experience. If you believe America’s public lands deserve protection, please take a few minutes today to contact your elected officials. What I'd like to see from you and the rest of Republicans in Congress - • Support protecting America’s public lands. • Support fully funding the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and other land management agencies. • Support science-based land management. • Oppose weakening protections that could open sensitive public lands to unnecessary extractive development. • Assert that you believe public lands should remain public, accessible, and protected for future generations. These lands belong to all of us and we want to keep them that way!
