Rename symbols of slavery and oppression in Maryland

To: Del. Chisholm, Del. Kipke, Del. Nkongolo, Sen. Simonaire

From: A constituent in Glen Burnie, MD

February 11, 2025

The Confederate States of America was an unrecognized breakaway republic that sought to perpetuate the institution of slavery and white supremacy. Its legacy continues to be a source of pain and division. It is long overdue for Maryland to stop commemorating and glorifying this shameful era of oppression and racial subjugation through government property bearing Confederate names. This legislation to establish a commission to identify and rename such properties is a positive step towards reckoning with our history and building a more equitable society that rejects symbols of hatred and discrimination. We must confront these remnants of the past in order to heal and move forward together as a state and nation. I strongly urge you to vote YES to HB0752.
