Gutting Medicaid
To: Rep. Alford
From: A verified voter in Columbia, MO
July 6
I am writing as a concerned constituent and as a dedicated school counselor in Columbia, Missouri, to express my strong opposition to the recently passed House bill that slashes vital Medicaid funding while delivering tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans.
Every day, I work directly with students and families who are struggling just to meet their most basic needs. Many of our children come to school hungry. Their families can’t afford a visit to the doctor, let alone critical mental health services. These are not abstract policy points — these are real people, real children, living in our district, who are directly harmed when the social safety net is gutted.
This bill does not reflect the values of compassion, responsibility, or good governance. It rewards the ultra-wealthy while punishing the working poor, the disabled, and families barely getting by. Medicaid is often the only way our students receive care — cutting it to fund tax breaks for billionaires is not only fiscally irresponsible, it is morally indefensible.
As someone on the front lines of education and community wellbeing, I urge you to reconsider the direction these policies are heading. I ask that you stand up for the children and families in our district, not just those with wealth and influence. Please oppose any future legislation that undermines healthcare access or worsens inequality in the name of tax relief for the privileged few.
Our communities deserve better.
