JD Vance thinks he gets to decided who deserves to be American, and Angie Nixon isn't on the list.
At a Florida rally this month, the Vice President told the crowd that the Jacksonville state representative and U.S. Senate candidate should "get the hell out" of the country -- that she doesn't "belong in America if those are your views."
Her views, for the record, include wanting people to have health care and homes.
Nixon is about as "from here" as an American can be. She is the granddaughter of Georgia sharecroppers, her family rooted in this country for generations.
"It's really disheartening, especially knowing that I come from folks who helped build this country," she observed in an interview after Vance's rally speech. "All I want for people is to have access to quality health care, to have access to fully funded public schools, for people to have homes, to live in and not have to worry about living on the streets. There's absolutely nothing radical or extreme about that. And I don't consider myself a socialist, I consider myself a lifelong Democrat who puts people over party, people over politics, and people over profit."
What she rejected most was his presumption: that belonging in America is his to grant or deny. "I don't need JD Vance's permission to belong here," she wrote. "We built this country. We bled for it. We worked the land, raised the children, and did the jobs nobody else wanted to do, all while being told at every turn that we didn't quite belong." As she summed up: "This is my home."
It is safe to say, JD Vance's ideas about who deserves to be American are in fact ver un-American.
Our Constitution decides who is an American.
We reject this Administration's MAGA, White Nationalist push to exclude anyone who isn't a White Christian from those considered deserving.
If these people can't respect and uphold the Constitution, they can't uphold their oaths of office and must be removed and replaced for the safety of the American people and the democracy we cherish!
