Expand RECA

To: Sen. Romney, Rep. Moore, Sen. Lee

From: A constituent in Eden, UT

June 3

The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) has provided only $2.6 billion in compensation to just 40,000 victims of nuclear testing fallout, a mere fraction of those impacted. Meanwhile, the federal government plans to spend $756 billion on more nuclear weapons over the next eight years. This appalling mismatch of priorities demonstrates a disregard for the health and wellbeing of Americans exposed to radioactive contamination from nuclear testing. Utahns were among those in downwind regions who faced heightened cancer risks, genetic damage, and multi-generational health impacts from the testing fallout. Expanding RECA to cover more victims and provide adequate compensation is a moral imperative that Congress can no longer ignore. Their refusal to take comprehensive action perpetuates and compounds this unprecedented injustice against Americans inadvertently but undeniably sacrificed in the name of nuclear supremacy.
