I am writing as a deeply concerned Minnesotan about the conditions in ICE detention centers and what they represent for our country.
The overcrowding, denial of medical care, lack of legal access, and treatment of children and families strip people of basic human dignity. This is no longer a disagreement over policy — it is a moral crisis. A nation that claims to stand for freedom cannot look away when cruelty becomes routine.
History shows us that authoritarian systems never last — but the shame they leave behind does. We are living through one of those moments now. It is not too late to choose a better path.
Many of you speak openly about your faith. Then I ask you to remember the words of Jesus:
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40)
If that belief means anything, it must mean action — now.
I urge you to take these steps immediately:
Demand independent oversight of ICE detention facilities and public accountability for conditions inside them.
Withhold funding from any facility that violates basic human rights, including access to medical care and legal counsel.
Support humane, community-based alternatives to mass detention that protect families and due process.
The United States should be a light for democracy and human dignity. Right now, we are falling short — but you still have the power to help change that.
Please choose courage over silence.
Sincerely,
