I am writing to express my deep concern over the disastrousimpact of President Trump’s tariffs on middle-class and working Americans.
These tariffs have effectively imposed billions in regressive taxes, disproportionately burdening lower-income households while increasing costs for everyday goods like cars, appliances, and food. Economists estimate that middle-class families will lose thousands annually due to these policies.
Congress holds the constitutional power to regulate trade
and impose duties under Article I, Section 8 of our Constitution. Yet, this authority has been delegated to the President without sufficient oversight. The results are clear: reckless tariffs are crippling the economy, driving inflation, and diminishing after-tax incomes for millions of Americans.
It is time for Congress to act decisively. Enacting
legislation like the Trade Authority Protection (TAP) Act would restore accountability, require economic impact assessments, and enable Congress to nullify harmful trade actions. The economy is crumbling under these misguided policies—will you stand by and fiddle as Rome burns?
I urge you to reclaim Congress’s constitutional role in trade policy and protect American families from further economic harm.
