Prioritize disaster preparedness, climate action to protect communities
To: Sen. Curtis, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Lee
From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT
July 8
The people of Texas are suffering immensely from the devastating floods that have claimed over 100 lives, including many children. Instead of offering empty platitudes or simply praying, substantive action is needed from Congress to address the underlying issues that exacerbated this tragedy. The cuts to critical agencies like NOAA and the National Weather Service hindered accurate forecasting and undermined preparedness, putting lives at risk. As climate change increases the likelihood of severe weather events, we must prioritize funding and resources to strengthen our disaster response capabilities. The people deserve more than just thoughts and prayers – they need tangible support, policy solutions, and a commitment to mitigating future catastrophes. Abdicating our responsibility to serve the public interest is unacceptable. I urge you to work towards implementing comprehensive measures to enhance forecasting, early warning systems, and relief efforts to protect all communities from the escalating impacts of climate change.
