As a woman who has suffered an unexpected miscarriage (in the bathroom at my workplace) I am so angry to see the "Clean Water For All Life Act" Introduced by Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL), Diana Harshbarger (R-TN), and Sheri Biggs (R-SC).
After I had a miscarriage at work, I was so shaky that I couldn't even stand up for half an hour. I lost a lot of blood and it took about an hour before my body calmed down enough for me to be in a position to drive myself home.
Now you may be able to see why I feel like having a miscarriage can be quite painful and traumatic.
What this bill proposes -
1. Treat miscarriage and abortion remains as medical waste to prevent them from entering water systems.
2. It includes provisions to make it illegal to flush abortion or miscarriage remains, with penalties potentially including fines and up to five years in prison for violations.
3. It aims to ban telehealth abortion, requiring in-person exams.
Aside from myself, all of the women I know who have had unexpected miscarriages had them over a toilet.
Expecting a woman to predict that a miscarriage will and be able to catch the expulsion of tissue, and also take that collection to a hospital and fill out paperwork is crazy.
Estimates suggest at least 1 in 4 women will experience at least miscarriage in their life. Between 10% and 25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage.
Having laws like this will inevitably punish women who did nothing wrong except have a very common female experience.
It is cruel and unreasonable and a classic example of wanting to control women and their bodies.
Oppose any effort to pass the "Clean Water For All Life Act!"
