Demand Congressional Authorization Before Continuing War With Iran
To: Rep. Maloy, Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee
From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT
March 9
You must demand that President Trump seek Congressional authorization before continuing military operations against Iran. The Constitution gives Congress alone the power to declare war, and this conflict has now entered its tenth day without that approval.
Trump dismissed concerns about oil prices surging above $110 per barrel as a "small price to pay," but American families are the ones paying it at the pump. He called people worried about these increases "fools" while offering no clear timeline for when this war will end. His Energy Secretary estimates weeks of elevated prices, but the administration won't commit to how long the fighting will last.
Iran has shut down the Strait of Hormuz, blocking 20% of the world's petroleum supply. This isn't temporary market jitters. This is a major conflict with real economic consequences that will hit working families hard. The President doesn't get to unilaterally wage war and then mock Americans for worrying about the fallout.
Congress has a constitutional duty to authorize military action. Require Trump to come before you for approval before one more day of this war continues. If he believes this conflict is necessary, he should make his case to the people's representatives, not bypass them entirely.
