The proposed coins featuring President Trump violate federal law and must be stopped. Three statutes explicitly prohibit this: the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 bans portraits of living people on the "tails" side of coins, 31 U.S. Code § 5112 prohibits coins bearing the image of any living former or current president, and the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 restricts $1 coins to deceased presidents only. The Commission of Fine Arts just approved a 24-carat gold coin showing Trump in the Oval Office, and Treasury officials have circulated draft designs for a $1 coin with Trump pumping his fist. These designs cannot move forward without congressional authorization or Treasury approval. You have the power to block this. President Coolidge is the only president to appear on U.S. currency while in office, nearly a century ago. There's a reason Congress passed laws against this practice. Enforce them. Make clear to the Treasury Secretary and U.S. Mint that no coins featuring living presidents will receive funding or authorization, and investigate whether the Commission of Fine Arts exceeded its legal authority in approving these designs.
