I’m writing to ask you to oppose the dismantling of USAID and the cutting of its staff. Cutting funding will cause many to die and accelerate the spread of drug-resistant tuberculosis, all to save less than 1% of our county’s budget. Stopping TB treatment before it’s completed is known to cause drug-resistant TB, making treatment more difficult and expensive. When this happens on a large scale, and these cuts are estimated to result in a 28-32% increase in tb cases globally, the resistance can spread around the world, threatening people from the US to Nigeria. These cuts could also cause a “superbug” to develop that is resistant to all our current medications.
