I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage regarding the recent treatment of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla, who was reportedly pushed to the ground and handcuffed during what appears to be a peaceful act of civil engagement or public duty. This treatment of a sitting senator is not only unacceptable—it is an affront to our democratic institutions and the rule of law.
Regardless of political affiliation or policy stance, no elected official should be subject to physical aggression or humiliation by law enforcement, especially while exercising their rights or fulfilling their role as a public servant. Such conduct undermines the very foundations of representative government and sends a chilling message about the state of civil liberties in our nation.
I call on you and your colleagues in Congress to speak out strongly and unequivocally against this incident. We must demand a full, transparent investigation into what happened and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. More broadly, this incident should spark a serious conversation about the use of force, law enforcement overreach, and the protections afforded to all Americans—elected or not—when engaging in lawful activity.
Senator Padilla deserves respect as a public servant, but more importantly, this nation deserves leadership that will not stay silent in the face of injustice. I urge you to stand up, speak out, and take action.
