No Fraud. No Justification. No Excuse. Vote NO on the SAVE Act

To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley

From: A verified voter in Des Moines, IA

February 26

I am urging you to vote NO on the SAVE Act. There is no good reason to vote yes. Not one that holds up to honest scrutiny. It Is Built on a Lie. Republican and Democratic investigations, federal courts, the Department of Homeland Security, and even the conservative Heritage Foundation have all reached the same conclusion — widespread voter fraud does not exist. The SAVE Act is a solution to an invented problem. The price of that invention will be paid by millions of real Americans with every legal right to vote. It Is Unconstitutional. Federal law already requires voters to affirm their citizenship under penalty of perjury. The SAVE Act does not strengthen that protection. It undermines it — adding barriers with no legal justification and no legitimate purpose. It Punishes the Wrong People. It is not the wealthy professional with documents neatly filed at home who suffers. It is the elderly woman in a rural county who was born at home and never had a birth certificate issued. It is the working family already stretched to breaking point, forced to choose between taking unpaid time off to visit a government office or keeping the lights on. These are not edge cases. These are millions of Americans. It Punishes Women for Getting Married. Millions of women who took their husband’s name will find their identification no longer matching their registration — through no fault of their own. They followed their hearts and honored a tradition as old as this nation. The SAVE Act punishes them for it. It Is a Poll Tax in Everything But Name. This bill demands that Americans pay with money they do not have, time they cannot spare, and documents they cannot easily obtain — simply to exercise a right that is already theirs. Poll taxes were abolished in this country for a reason. It Will Destroy Trust in Our Elections. When eligible voters are turned away the outcomes of those elections will never be fully trusted. Every voter turned away becomes a story. Every story becomes a grievance. Every grievance becomes another crack in a democracy already under enormous strain. The SAVE Act does not reduce doubt in our elections. It creates it. There Is No Good Reason to Vote Yes. No fraud epidemic to stop. No constitutional justification. No defensible argument for a law that punishes the poor, the vulnerable, and women simply for participating in their own democracy. Senator, your constituents are watching — including the ones this bill would silence. Elections must be inclusive, fair, and beyond doubt. The SAVE Act betrays every one of those principles. Vote NO. Because elections belong to all of us — or they belong to none of us.
