Against Abolishment of US Department of Education

To: Rep. Olszewski, Sen. Alsobrooks, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A constituent in Parkville, MD

February 2, 2025

I am writing to strongly oppose any effort to abolish the U.S. Department of Education. Eliminating this department would be a direct attack on students with disabilities, stripping away essential protections and support for those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The Department of Education ensures that students with disabilities receive the services and accommodations they are legally entitled to under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Without federal oversight, students with IEPs risk losing critical support, widening educational disparities and placing an unfair burden on families and schools. Abolishing this department is not a solution—it is a harmful and reckless move that would fail our most vulnerable students. I urge you to stand against this effort and protect the rights of all students, especially those who rely on special education services. I look forward to your response on how you plan to safeguard these essential protections.
