Oppose SB-172
To: Rep. Carey
From: A constituent in Columbus, OH
June 20
I’m writing to express my strong opposition to Senate Bill 172. This bill undermines both local authority and fundamental constitutional protections, and I urge you to vote against it.
SB 172 would strip local governments, courts, schools, and other public bodies of their ability to set policies that protect due process and public safety. By forcing all public officials to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement—even without a judicial warrant—it disregards the separation of powers and invites the risk of unlawful arrests and racial profiling.
This kind of legislation does not make our communities safer. In fact, it does the opposite—discouraging immigrants from reporting crimes, showing up to court, or accessing public services for fear of detention. These are human rights issues, not just legal ones.
Ohio deserves laws that strengthen trust between communities and their institutions, not policies that criminalize presence or silence vulnerable people.
Please stand with your constituents in opposing SB 172. Our state should lead with fairness, compassion, and justice.
