An Open Letter

To: Sen. Agard, Gov. Evers, Rep. Baldeh

From: A constituent in Madison, WI

November 7

I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent, mental health professional, and as a parent. The recent election results have left me, like many others, with profound fears for the future of our country—especially regarding the rights of women, BIPOC individuals, LGBTQIA+ communities, and people with disabilities. With small children at home, I am especially worried about the kind of world they will inherit. I want to ensure that they grow up in a country that values equality, safety, and justice for all. Under the previous Trump administration, we saw repeated attacks on essential protections that uphold equality and justice for marginalized groups. The regression of rights—such as reproductive healthcare for women, anti-discrimination protections for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals, and accessibility rights for people with disabilities—has left many Americans feeling vulnerable and powerless. I fear that, with Trump once again in power, these rights may continue to erode, undoing decades of progress that would otherwise help secure a fair and inclusive future for my children and generations to come. Women’s rights, particularly regarding reproductive health, face renewed threats under this administration, potentially restricting access to safe and legal abortions, contraceptives, and broader healthcare services. These policies not only undermine women’s rights but also weaken our society’s commitment to personal freedom and bodily autonomy—values I want my children to grow up understanding and respecting. Equally concerning is the treatment of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and disabled communities. Many of the policies previously championed by Trump’s administration fueled divisive rhetoric and undermined protections for these communities. Disability rights, in particular, are at risk of being further marginalized, potentially limiting access to vital services, accommodations, and legal protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). My children, and all children, deserve to grow up in a world where everyone is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect. I urge you to take a strong stand in protecting the rights and freedoms of all Americans. As my elected representative, I am asking you to actively support and prioritize legislation that safeguards women’s rights, advances racial equity, upholds the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals, and ensures equal access and protections for people with disabilities. Now more than ever, we need leaders who are unwavering in their commitment to justice, equality, and human dignity. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I hope I can count on you to take meaningful action to ensure that the future of our country reflects the values of inclusivity, fairness, and respect—values that are vital for my children’s future and the future of our nation.
