I am writing to express my strong opposition to the recently announced special session called by Governor Mike Braun to redraw Indiana's congressional maps. This mid-decade redistricting effort, announced on October 27, is not only unnecessary but also raises serious concerns about the integrity of our democratic process.
The timing and motivation behind this special session are deeply troubling. It appears to be a direct response to a request from the Trump administration, rather than a genuine need to address issues with our current district maps. This suggests a partisan attempt to manipulate electoral boundaries for political gain, which goes against the principles of fair representation.
It's worth noting that, according to a Senate Republicans spokesperson, there are currently not enough votes to pass redistricting legislation. This lack of support within the legislature itself indicates that this move may not have broad backing even among our elected officials.
Redrawing congressional maps mid-decade, outside of the regular post-census redistricting process, sets a dangerous precedent. It undermines the stability and predictability of our electoral system, potentially leading to confusion among voters and eroding public trust in our democratic institutions.
I urge you to stand against this attempt to redraw our congressional maps. Instead, I ask that you advocate for maintaining the current districts until the next regularly scheduled redistricting process. This would ensure that any changes to our electoral map are based on updated census data and follow established procedures, rather than being driven by short-term political interests.
Our democracy is built on the principle of fair representation. Any attempt to alter this for partisan advantage, especially outside of the normal redistricting cycle, threatens the very foundation of our political system. I implore you to prioritize the long-term health of our democracy over any potential short-term political gains.
Your position on this matter will significantly influence my future voting decisions. I, along with many other constituents, will be closely watching how our representatives respond to this critical issue. Please stand up for fair representation and oppose this untimely and potentially harmful redistricting effort.
