Oppose Mid-Decade Redistricting in Indiana
To: Rep. Barrett, Sen. Raatz
From: A verified voter in Richmond, IN
November 6
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed mid-decade redistricting effort in Indiana. This unprecedented move to redraw our congressional maps before the next census is not only unethical but threatens the very foundations of our democratic process. The current maps, finalized in October 2021, are the result of the standard 10-year redistricting cycle following the most recent census. Attempting to alter these boundaries now, barely four years into their implementation, undermines the stability and fairness of our electoral system. This effort, announced by GOP legislative leaders and postponed to December, appears to be a calculated attempt to weaken representation for Black, Latino, and urban communities. The districts being targeted, which cover much of Indianapolis and northwest Indiana, are currently represented by Democrats. This suggests a partisan motivation behind the redistricting push, rather than a genuine effort to improve representation for all Hoosiers. U.S. Rep. Andre Carson, whose Indianapolis district is the only majority-minority district in our state, has already expressed serious concerns about this proposal. On November 3, 2025, the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus and community advocates rallied at the Statehouse against this redistricting effort. Their message was clear: "Democracy Doesn't Get Redrawn." Faith leaders and advocates alike stressed the importance of fair representation and the spiritual implications of this issue. I urge you to stand against this mid-decade redistricting attempt. Respect the established redistricting cycle and protect the voice of every Hoosier. The Senate has announced it will complete its legislative business by December 12 and reconvene on January 5 for the annual session. I implore you to use this time to oppose any changes to our congressional maps and uphold the integrity of our democratic processes. The consequences of this action extend far beyond party lines. It's about preserving the trust of constituents in their electoral system and ensuring that every community in Indiana has fair and equal representation. Please prioritize the principles of democracy over short-term political gains and reject this untimely redistricting effort.
