Constitutional Violations by ICE Agents Require Immediate Action

To: Sen. Risch, Rep. Simpson, Sen. Crapo

From: A verified voter in Sun Valley, ID

January 26

I am writing to you with deep concern about the ongoing federal immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota, particularly in Minneapolis, and the recent deaths of two U.S. citizens during these operations. Over the last several weeks, federal immigration agents have been deployed in large numbers in the Twin Cities as part of “Operation Metro Surge.” According to reporting, this deployment exceeds local law enforcement numbers and has resulted in confrontations that escalated to fatal shootings. On January 7, a U.S. citizen, Renee Good, was shot and killed by an ICE agent during an enforcement action in Minneapolis. On January 24, another U.S. citizen, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse at the Veterans Affairs hospital and a lawful gun owner with a concealed-carry permit, was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents during the same campaign. Pretti’s death followed footage showing him filming agents and attempting to assist others before being subdued and shot multiple times. These incidents have sparked widespread protests and calls for accountability. I find these events deeply upsetting. I did not expect federal law enforcement in this country to engage U.S. citizens with lethal force absent clear and imminent threat. These deaths raise serious questions about the adherence of federal agencies to constitutional protections, including the right to due process, protection against unreasonable searches and seizures, and the rights to free speech and assembly. The deaths of Good and Pretti have eroded trust and caused fear among residents who are simply exercising their rights. I urge you to take the following actions: • Call for an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into both shootings. • Demand accountability for any actions that violated the Constitution or federal law. • Support legislative or oversight measures to ensure that federal immigration enforcement respects civil liberties and the rights of all U.S. citizens. These incidents strike at the core of what the Constitution protects and what Americans expect from their government. I ask you to stand up for the rule of law and to push for meaningful oversight of federal enforcement operations. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
